Stonelaw High School and Ikusasalethu High School - Proud to be Partners!

Our school partnership with Ikusasalethu High School has been growing from strength to strength since 2009.

With about 1,400 learners and 50 teachers, Ikusasalethu High School is situated in a rural area in Mtubatuba, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Many of the learners face huge challenges which affect their learning, e.g. long walk to school, lack of nourishment, water shortages and poverty. Educators are required to teach, and students to learn, in English, their first additional language: isiZulu is their home language. Classrooms are poorly resourced and overcrowded. Yet despite these challenges, Ikusasalethu High School learners work hard and achieve excellent 'matriculation' results; in 2013, of the 157 learners who sat national examinations, 93% passed five or more Highers!!

Both schools enjoy great learning benefits from joint global curriculum projects.  'Voices for Change' began with learners analysing songs of protest and developed into collaborative activities on Gender Respect. Through participating and sharing in the Inspire-Aspire values programme, 'Global Citizens in the Making', learners gain insight into each others' contexts, challenges and perspectives – and also find out that, as teenagers, they have a lot in common. From examining Healthy Tourism locally, learners will be moving on to compare what sustainability means in their different environments.
