Senior Phase

It is recommended that all pupils in the Senior phase read as much quality journalism as possible and continually revise their main texts and techniques. 

Advanced Higher

  This exam is split into the following areas:

  • A dissertation of 2,500–3,500 words on texts agreed with the teacher.  This counts for 30% of the overall grade.
  • Folio - Two pieces of extended writing (max. 1300 words) which are sent to the SQA and count for 30% of the overall grade.
  • Textual Analysis - Pupils will choose one question on an unseen literary text and write an extended critical analysis of it. this will be selected from poetry, prose, prose non-fiction or drama.  This section counts for 20% of the overall grade and is completed under timed conditions in the final exam.
  • Literary Study - Pupils will choose one question from a range of questions and write a critical essay in response to it on a text previously studied in class.  This will account for the final 20% of the overall grade and will be completed under timed conditions in the final exam.  The texts chosen for this section must not be the same as those used in the dissertation.
